Things To Consider

To be honest, a few years ago when I decided to buy a weight bench for my home gym, I was really confused. There are so many different factors to consider and it took me months to figure out which was right for me. Now, with the following factors, it’s you turn to determine which is right for yourself:

Types

As you can see, there are many types of weight benches on the market. However, when it comes to general fitness purposes, there are only 3 types: Flat weight bench, adjustable weight bench, Olympic weight bench. Each of these types has its own advantages and disadvantages, therefore, consider each type carefully before you buy something.

1. Flat Weight Bench

Obviously, flat weight benches are the most basic and lightweight among the 3 types. That’s why they’re very solid without any moving parts. Thus, they’re not likely to shake while you’re lifting heavy like low-quality Olympic or adjustable weight benches.

Besides, while the other 2 types always have a gap between the pads when they’re flat, this one doesn’t. And this annoying gap is the main reason why you feel insecure while lifting heavy. Therefore, I never choose an adjustable and Olympic bench to do the flat dumbbell bench press.

Because it is flat, you can’t do the incline or decline bench press and that is the only downside of this weight bench. But there are still a lot of exercises you can do on the bench. And if you don’t need to work incline and decline positions, a flat weight bench is totally fine.

2. Adjustable Weight Bench

These ones may look like the previous type but they can be adjusted to multiple positions. Actually, many people choose an adjustable bench for their home gym because of its versatility and mobility.

Generally, these weight benches are great for different purposes as there are a lot of exercises you can do. With different angles and positions, you can easily target different angles of your muscles, even the hard-to-reach parts. Therefore, no matter level you’re at, beginner or experienced lifter, this is not a bad idea.

However, as mentioned before, an adjustable bench may be not firm enough if you are lifting too heavy compared to its weight capacity. Additionally, a gap between the pads can make you feel uncomfortable, especially when you’re working the flat position.

3. Olympic Weight Bench

Olympic weight benches are very useful for multiple purposes. This is because depending on the model, you can work many different muscle groups, including the triceps and legs which an adjustable bench can’t do.

Overall, if you have general fitness purposes, then go for this one. Also, if you are a beginner or you can’t afford to go to the gym, an Olympic bench with enough attachments is very beneficial.

However, one advantage of this type is that it is usually bulky and therefore, hard to move around. Besides, if it is not a high-quality bench, then the attachments are likely not to be sturdy and durable.

Quality

No matter what fitness goals you have or which bench type you choose, go for a high-quality weight bench. A weight bench should provide stability, and poorly made products will probably wobble very quickly.

Used spaceThis is another important thing to consider if you want to buy the best workout bench for home. There are a lot of weight benches which are compact, small and even foldable for storage. However, some other models are unnecessarily bulky and take up much space. For example, if you don’t have much floor space, then an Olympic weight bench may be not a good idea.

Comfort

When it comes to comfort, it all comes down to the upholstery of a bench. In details, thin padding on the back pads and seat can make your workout less comfortable. In my experiences, just make sure your workout bench has upholstery which is 1 inch thick at least. Also, the upholstery should be sewed on with a box stitch as it is the best stitch against tear and wear.

Additionally, make sure the bench is long enough so that it can cover your entire head. For example, if you are taller than 6 foot, you will definitely feel uncomfortable if the bench is too short. To prevent this, you’ll need to look at the dimensions of the bench you’re going to buy to make sure it’s comfortable enough. However, my advice is to choose a unit with height adjustments.

Weight Capacity

This is way more important than you thought. Trust me, I know how it feels when a weight bench can’t hold our body weight when we’re lifting too heavy. I once experienced this and almost hurt myself with the 2 100-lb dumbbells on my body. So, please determine how much weight you usually lift on the bench. Then you will know which weight capacity you need to look for to find the most suitable one.

Versatility

If you’re looking for something versatile, then a flat bench may be not your choice. Instead, just go for an adjustable or Olympic weight bench when they can be adjusted to multiple positions. This way, they allow you to work different muscle groups and target any part of your muscles with ease.

Although adjustable and Olympic benches are adjustable, they have different number of positions and angles. Actually, the number ranges from 3 to even 11. All you need is think about each exercise you can do on the bench. This will help you make sure the bench has enough positions and angles for your workout routine

Price

An Olympic weight bench is more expensive than an adjustable bench. And an adjustable bench is more expensive than a flat bench. That is obvious, right? For me, if you don’t want to spend a lot of money, then it’s recommended to buy a flat or adjustable weight bench. However, if you have general fitness goals and you’re not on a budget, just go for an Olympic unit.

Top 5 Best Workout Bench For Home

If you are looking for a compact and sturdy flat weight bench, then this one is right for you. This unit features a high-density foam, therefore, providing form body support. It is very lightweight, only 18 pounds, but extremely solid. To be honest, this bench is a budget-friendly choice for anyone who doesn’t really need to work out with incline and decline.

Actually, when it comes to chest exercises, I spend most of my time working out with the flat position. Unlike an adjustable bench, there is no gap so you will feel very comfortable, allowing you to bench heavy. See? It’s not by chance that there must be a reason why so many lifters choose a flat weight bench instead of an adjustable unit.

A downside of this product is that it can only hold 300 pounds, including your body weight. Therefore, if you are going to bench 80 dumbbells, then this bench is not for you.

PROS

CONS

  • Lightweight
  • No gap between pads
  • Sturdy and durable
  • Affordable
  • No angle adjustment
  • Restrictive weight capacity
  • Maybe small for tall people
  • No wheel included
  • Good for: General use, small budget

If you are a powerlifter or a serious bodybuilder, then go for this bench. The most impressive feature of this product is its maximum weight capacity which is 1000 lbs. No matter how much weight you lift, 1000 lbs are more than enough, even for serious bodybuilders. Therefore, you don’t have to worry about the bench swinging when lifting heavy weights.

The pad is very thick, firm but still comfortable for you to lift heavy. With thick plywood base layer, this bench provides great support and comfort. Furthermore, it is covered professionally stitched and textured non-slip vinyl, thus, very durable.

However, what I don’t really like about this one is that I have to level it frequently. Specifically, after I level it for a place, it will definitely wobble in another place. Actually, I’ve never had this kind of problem with other benches I’ve used but it may come down to the heavy construction.

PROS

CONS

  • Very sturdy and firm
  • Comfortable thick pad
  • Durable
  • Easy to assemble
  • No angle adjustment
  • Quite expensive for a flat bench
  • Frequently level the bench frequently
  • No wheel included
  • Good for: hardcore lifters who always work the flat position

You’re looking for the best workout bench for home which is both adjustable and sturdy? Well, if so, then this one is worth your consideration. It has 6 different angles, from 17 degree decline to 90 degree incline. I believe that 6 positions are enough for general fitness goals. Additionally, you can adjust the seat to 2 positions for working out with the incline, thus, ensuring extra comfort and support.

The bench features a stable base. Therefore, it won’t end up swinging unless you are lifting more than its maximum weight capacity which is 400 lbs. Besides, the bench also features wheels that make it much easier for you to move it around or store.

However, even though the upholstery is quite durable and easy to clean, the padding is likely to wrinkle over time. Also, with the weight capacity of 400 lbs, you can’t lift really heavy on the bench.

PROS

CONS

  • 6 different adjustments
  • Wide sturdy base
  • Removable leg support
  • Transport wheels included
  • Quite bulky
  • Not for really serious lifters

If you want to work out with incline and decline positions and still need something very sturdy, this bench is your best bet. With the maximum weight capacity of 1000 lbs, this one is great for use with dumbbells, barbells, smith machine or power rack. And this unit is useful for any lifter, especially serious bodybuilders.

Just like many other adjustable benches, it has 7 different positions from 20 degree incline to 85 degree incline. Besides, it features 4 seat position adjustment, ensuring for great comfort and support. Additionally, the vinyl covered rollers can keep your legs locked in place. Hence you will not end up slipping while working the decline position.

A drawback of this unit is that it’s quite heavy, about 85 pounds, which makes it quite difficult for you to move it around. Furthermore, the rubber grips on the end of the leg are likely to fall off quickly. And if you want to change the seat, it may take you a bit longer than other models.

PROS

CONS

  • 7 ladder positions and 4 seat positions
  • Extremely solid with a weight capacity of 1000 lbs
  • Durable thick pad covered in vinyl
  • Roller pads for leg supprt
  • Quite heavy and bulky
  • Small wheels
  • A little bit expensive
  • Good for: Mid to heavy lifters, everyone.

If you can’t afford to go to the gym, then an all-purpose weight bench can meet your needs. This Olympic weight bench has a very common design with an adjustable bench, preacher curl, and leg developer. Hence, you can target different muscle groups such as chest, abs, arms and legs.

With the 7-position adjustable backrest, you can do the bench press from different angles, thus, working even hard-to-reach parts of muscles. The adjustable dual-action leg developer provides you foam rollers so that you can do leg curl/ extension comfortably.

Additionally, with built-in safety hooks and no-pinch design, this bench helps prevent injury to hand and grip. Besides, the U-shaped front leg stabilizer gives you extra safety and stability while you’re benching heavy weights. This product also comes with an Olympic plate adapter, allowing you to use either Olympic or standard plates.

However, this bench has the maximum lifting weight of only 180 pounds. That’s why if you expect to bench 100 kilo or 225 lb, then this one can’t hold it. But if you are a beginner, buying this Olympic bench is not a bad idea.

  • Good for: general use, home use, beginners.

Final Thoughts

There are quite a lot of things when it comes to choosing the best workout bench for home. However, as you can see, it all comes down to your fitness purposes. Therefore, I believe that once you determine what you need, you can easily buy yourself a suitable workout bench.
